Compensation
Understanding Your Pay Slip
Gross Salary
The amount you agreed upon with your employer before signing your contract.
Before your (net) salary is deposited into your bank account, there are several additions and deductions.
Do you have a day of leave or holiday? Then your gross salary for that day includes compensation for worked days and payment for that vacation or holiday.
Social Security Contribution
The contribution to the National Social Security Office amounts to 13.07% of your gross salary. This amount is allocated for child benefits, allowances, and pensions.
As a blue-collar worker, first multiply your income by 1.08. Then deduct 13.07% from that amount. What remains is your taxable income.
Withholding Tax
After that, a portion of your salary goes to the tax authorities.
The more you earn, the higher the withholding tax.
Do you have children or care for a live-in parent? Are you legally cohabiting or the sole earner? Then you pay less taxes.
Keep in mind that the withholding tax is an advance payment. The tax inspector calculates the following year what you should have actually paid to the tax authorities.
If you paid too much each month, you’ll receive a refund.
If your withholding tax was too low, you’ll be asked to make an additional payment.
Special and Personal Contributions
What remains after social security contributions and withholding tax is your net salary.
From your net amount, you still contribute to meal vouchers, group insurance, benefits in kind (such as laptop and company car), etc.
If you receive a bicycle allowance or mobile phone allowance, your total net salary increases.
Net Salary
After calculating the social security contribution, withholding tax, and special contributions, we arrive at your net salary.
This is the amount you actually receive in your account.

Tax-Advantaged Overtime in 2021
For the period from 01.01.2019 – 31.12.2020, the tax-advantaged overtime quota was temporarily set at 180 hours instead of 130 hours.
Given the expiration of the temporary increase to 180 hours and in the absence of a Royal Decree extending the system, the quota for tax-advantaged overtime hours will return to 130 hours for 2021.
The existing increase for the hospitality sector and construction sector remains in place.
•In the construction sector (and related sectors), the limit of 130 overtime hours was increased to 180 hours on January 1, 2014, provided that the work sites effectively use an attendance registration system.
•In the hospitality sector, the limit of 130 overtime hours was increased to 360 hours on December 1, 2015. This extension applies to employers under the joint committee
302 or joint committee 322, temporary employment agencies operating under joint committee 302.
